NCS leaders ‘disappointed’ by government decision to close programme

Leaders of the National Citizen Service (NCS), David Cameron’s flagship youth offer, have said they are “sad and disappointed” by the government’s decision to end the programme.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy announced plans to wind down the NCS from March next year.

The NCS Trust, a charity set up to oversee the programme, will fold “when parliamentary time allows”, Nandy added.

The closure of the programme, which was launched by former Prime Minister Cameron in 2011, comes as part of plans for the government to create a new National Youth Strategy.

Announcing the closure in House of Commons yesterday (12 November), Nandy said: “The NCS met the needs of the moment and put active citizenship rightly at the heart of the government’s programme for young people but the world has changed and we need a youth strategy that reflects that.
