More than 150 organisations call for action to end youth homelessness

A collective of more than 150 organisations supporting young people experiencing homelessness staged a protest outside parliament this week calling on the government to do more to tackle the issue.
Protesters argue the government has been non-committal about specific provision for young people in its forthcoming homelessness strategy. Picture: Centrepoint

They are calling on ministers to ensure action to help young people without a home or at risk of losing their home is included in its forthcoming strategy to end homelessness.

This needs to focus on action in schools and communities to prevent young people becoming homeless in schools as well as review support councils can offer.

The benefit system also needs to be overhauled to support young people into work and improve access to “good quality, affordable homes”.

The group is concerned that ministers “have been non-committal about whether there will be any specific provision for young people” in the strategy.

They say specific provision for young people is needed as the reasons and current support available is different to challenges facing older people.
