Its research shows that a lack of support for young people leaving care is putting them at greater risk of homelessness and forcing them into unsafe accommodation which is “in a poor state of repair”.
Sometimes they are offered places with adults with substance abuse issues or facing mental health challenges.
Latest government statistics show a 54% increase in the number of care leavers facing homelessness over the last five years, warns the care charity, which is calling on ministers to “end the care cliff” young people face when they leave care.
This can be achieved by expanding Staying Put schemes, whereby young people can stay with foster carers until they are 21, and Staying Close, where those in residential care can continue to be supported by the care home by being housed nearby.
