More than 100 charities are calling on the government to commit to a strategy to end youth homelessness, after research revealed that 129,000 young people sought support from councils last year because they were in housing crisis.

The new collective – which includes Centrepoint, YMCA and New Horizon Youth Centre – have urged the government to adopt a proposed strategy to tackle youth homelessness, prioritising prevention, housing and finances.

This comes after research from Centrepoint revealed that 129,000 16- to 24-year-olds had contacted their local authority for help last year for issues relating to homelessness – with Centrepoint estimating that 353 new young people were in need of support every day.

The charities called for the strategy to include plans for supporting young people to avoid homelessness crisis, should establish better and safer options to identify and support those facing homelessness, and ensure fairer pay and resources are available to empower young people to build independent and successful lives.
