Lottery funding for English play projects

1 min read Education Youth Work
The Big Lottery Fund has announced 3 million pounds worth of funding to be handed out to 16 inclusive play projects across England.

The funding comes from the Fund's Playful Ideas programme and focuses on projects for children of all abilities. Including children in the planning stage is another aspect of the funding.

Organisations to benefit include Merseyside Youth Association, which has been given £249,000 to provide playgoups for seven- to 16-year-olds.

Others include a £500,000 donation to the Dukes Meadows Play Space in Hounslow to create an adventure play area for seven- to 15-year-olds.

Another is a Torbay Play Forum project called Creative Play Journeys to redevelop play areas, which has been handed £250,000. Children and young people as well as local artists and musicians will be involved in the design stage.

"All of these projects are using innovative approaches to encourage children from a variety of backgrounds to participate in playful activities," said Sanjay Dighe, chair of the Big Lottery Fund's England committee.

"The essential benefits that play brings as part of a child's well-being and development are becoming more and more common knowledge. All children should have the opportunity to play and just as importantly, to have fun," she added.
