Lib Dem conference: Call for young people to get paid internships

Unemployed young people should have access to paid work experience to stop them falling out of employment, education or training, according to David Laws, education spokesman for the Liberal Democrats.

Speaking at the Liberal Democrats' annual conference, Laws said internships could be key to preventing large numbers of young people from becoming disengaged.

He said: "We ought to consider introducing a new training benefit or support package for young people, which would allow them to recive at least the level of Jobseeker's Allowance if they take up an internship opportunity."

Laws also argued that there should be more flexible education and training options, particularly for the hardest to reach young people.

One option, he said, is to get colleges to deliver a more comprehensive range of short courses to vulnerable young people, who are not in a position to study long-term.
