New peer Jonathan Hill has been appointed as parliamentary under-secretary of state for schools by the Department for Education.

Former political secretary to John Major, Hill was made a lord yesterday and immediately given a junior minister role within the Department for Education.

Hill had previously worked for PR consultancy firm Quiller Consultants, which he co-founded in 1998. He specialised in representing clients with an interest in education and transport.

He has years of experience providing advice and support for previous governments. In 1991 he joined the Conservative government's Policy Unit, specialising in housing, transport and inner-city policy. He then went on to run John Major's election campaign in the 1992 general election.
