Investors in families: Bucks schools to trial accreditation

1 min read
A local authority plans to roll out a new accreditation scheme for schools that demonstrate positive approaches to working with families.

Buckinghamshire County Council is the first in the UK to sign up to theInvestors in Families scheme, which has been developed by head teachers'school governors and local authority officers. The scheme aims topromote a set of national standards based on the five Every ChildMatters outcomes that all schools can work towards.

Six Buckinghamshire primary schools will pilot the scheme before it isrolled out to all schools in the county. Interim head of schoolimprovement Val Osbaldeston said she hoped the scheme would give schoolsa greater incentive to involve parents in the child's learning.

"In terms of our work around Every Child Matters, we were working withschools, but in isolation from parents," she said. "This plugs a gap forus in that it helps to bring parents into schools. We hope it willchange some of the practices and get parents to contribute to thedialogue." To gain accreditation, the schools will be required toprovide evidence that they are meeting the scheme's standards.Accreditation will also be based on an annual visit.
