In the new edition of CYP Now: Lifelong Links; reducing care; and attainment gap

The December edition of CYP Now charts the development of the Lifelong Links project and how the areas piloting it help looked-after children find and reconnect with birth family members.

The government is to fund the expansion of three programmes to 20 councils in an effort to stem the continued rise in the number of children in care. We analyse what impact the programmes have had, while experts emphasise the need to do more to keep families together in the first place.

Efforts to narrow the attainment gap is the focus of the 12-page special report. Achievement for All summarise the latest research developments, and there are four examples of good practice including: Wolverhampton Council's support for learners in care; the Maths Champions programme for pre-schoolers; a collaborative approach across Tower Hamlets schools; and A Better Start in Southend on Sea.
