Following a England-wide consultation exercise, specialist child andadolescent mental health services (CAMHS) proposed 15 key competencesall workers should have.
Barry Nixon, national workforce lead for CAMHS, told Children Now thattraditional sources of mental health workers, such as doctors, nursesand social workers, were drying up. "We need to look at attractingpeople who haven't applied in the past, such as someone who's done apsychology degree, to come into core roles," he said.
Despite year-on-year increases of 10 per cent in the CAMHS workforcesince 2004, there is a significant shortfall in the number of staffneeded to meet demand.
The competences will allow local areas to develop training packages tobring workers, including those from junior positions such as healthcareassistants, up to specialist level.
