HEADS CALL ON BROWN TO SPEED UP FUNDING PLEDGE

Head teachers have called on Prime Minister Gordon Brown to bring forward his promise to raise state school funding, after last week's A-level results revealed that the latest improvements in results are largely down to independent schools.

John Dunford, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said: "This represents a challenge to Gordon Brown to bring forward his promise to raise funding in state schools to the level in independent schools."
Schools minister Jim Knight said the government is commitment to investment in mainstream education in order to increase opportunity. "That is why we have increased investment in state schools, and it is why we are delighted with the record results achieved," he said.
Meanwhile students at Farnborough Sixth Form College last week became the first to be awarded the new A-level baccalaureate. The diploma, which will be available nationally from September 2008, combines A-levels with community participation, an extended project and an AS-level in general studies, critical thinking or citizenship.
