The joint National Union of Teachers (NUT) and National College for School Leadership report found that school leaders who respect the communities they serve improve the achievement of white working-class pupils.
The report said there was no "silver bullet" to solve the endemic problem of poor school attainment in the white working class.
But the school leaders who did buck the trend and achieve good results for their pupils had consistently high expectations of students, regardless of class.
Teachers said having a "profound respect" for the families they work with was crucial to breeding success, as was sensitivity to local problems and the emotional state of pupils and colleagues.
