Extra funding for schools to cover intensive educational and family support to all struggling pupils would help those from white working-class backgrounds, without affecting current funding to minority ethnic groups, the union says.
The NUT's policy document Opening Locked Doors also calls for training for teachers, governors and head teachers on social class issues. It says another benefit for white, working-class pupils would be a focus in the curriculum on local history.
Christine Blower, NUT general secretary, said: "Social class has the greatest effect on educational achievement. It is still the case that how much your parents earn and the quality of their own education has the greatest influence on the achievement of their children.
