Government urged to make family-friendly spending cuts

1 min read Early Years
Suggestions for how the government should manage spending cuts to ensure the best outcomes for families are among recommendations published by the Family & Parenting Institute (FPI), following a conference in July.

In the report, entitled Family Policy and the New Government, the FPI makes a number of proposals such as basing cuts on impact assessments for different generations and types of families.

It emphasises the need for the government to create jobs suited to family lifestyles, including the right to flexible working from the first day of employment. Current legislation gives employers 26 weeks after hiring before they must negotiate more flexible hours.

Speakers at the conference included children's minister Sarah Teather, who spoke about emerging family policy in the current economic climate.

"We staged this conference soon after the general election to bring together the family sector and allow Sarah Teather to hear its views and concerns," said FPI spokesman Michael Connellan.
