Government gives 4.5 million pound funding for activity projects

Youth Work
Children's minister Beverley Hughes has announced 4.5 million pounds of funding for activities for young people, including summer camps and arts and media projects.

The cash will also pay for community cohesion-themed camps, run by the Youth Hostel Association, for young people from deprived areas.

Themes of the summer camps, including the community camps, will include gang activity, managing rivalry between areas and community issues.

The money will also be used to provide media projects for young people looking at issues relevant to them, and these will be run by youth media fund Mediabox.

Hughes said: "I am aware that there are lots of challenges young people face in contributing positively to their local community, but things can be done to tackle problems at the earliest opportunity.

"Running projects in the evenings and weekends will help those young people who are turning to drink, crime or anti-social behaviour simply because they are bored."

The funding will run until 2011.
