Government defends 21st Century Schools agenda

1 min read Education
The government has rejected criticism from MPs that the 21st Century Schools agenda is too confusing for schools to implement.

The agenda, which was laid out in last year's white paper Your Child, Your Schools, Our Future, was criticised by Children, Schools and Families select committee members in their latest report on school accountability.

They say the agenda, which includes the introduction of school report cards, "signals even greater complexity in an already overly complex system of school accountability and improvement initiatives".

However, in its response the government maintains that the agenda "heralds a simplification of the accountability and improvement system by devolving resources and decision making to schools and setting the School Report Card at the heart of accountability".

Ofsted has also responded to the committee's report and its recommendation that the inspectorate do more to help schools evaluate their performance.

The inspectorate says that changes to its inspections last year give a greater focus on strong leadership and the responsibility of head teachers to ensure schools prioritise self-evaluation.
