A chance meeting at a conference resulted in Bethan Mentore, literacy co-ordinator at Chalkhill Primary School in Wembley, inviting children’s author Verna Wilkins to work with her year 5 class to produce a picture book aimed at reception children.
Mentore thought that working with Wilkins would give the pupils a unique insight into the process or producing a picture book, as well as see them put some of their own experiences of life in multi-cultural Britain into print through characters they could relate to.
They helped develop the story, choose the characters’ names and write poems for the book. They were involved at every stage of production, from the initial raw story through to the edited, illustrated book.
