cases.

Early years workers are supposed to help develop children's knowledge and understanding of the world.

- Any tips on how to do that?

This is an area that often confuses staff. Many hone in on festivals, but it is far more effective and interesting to focus on the local community and help children see their place in their neighbourhoods. Using the local environment is a sensible way of helping children explore, observe and make sense of the physical world and simpler than planning costly and complicated outings.

Many children travel to nursery by car and would find it hard to plot their route from home. So get out and walk around the neighbourhood. Plan observation and mapping walks or try technology walks with digital cameras. Pop into the local cafe for a hot chocolate and pass by places regularly so neighbours get to know you and say "hello". Visit the post office, railway or bus station, and local supermarket and get behind the scenes. Get involved in community events. It's all on your doorstep.
