young carers, devising a nursery strategy and youth work careers.
I'm an assistant director of children's services at an authority that has succeeded in protecting youth services. But we now need to reduce spending and, given recent legal challenges, I'm worried this could go badly. Any advice?
You are right to anticipate difficulty, but it is possible to minimise potential challenges. You cannot legislate for a minority of one, so an individual challenge is always possible. But you can follow a process that will demonstrate you have done this with young people and not just to them.
Set up a consultation group or management board that includes young people. Convene meetings with your youth parliament or council and invite and encourage young people to become part of the solution. Give a joint presentation with your head of service and include youth workers.
