Get Connected, a charity that signposts young people across the UK to services ranging from support with housing to help with substance abuse, said that its records show that in the past financial year an average of three to four organisations a week disappeared from its network of organisations.
Chief executive of the organisation Fiona Clark said that levels of support for young people have been badly impacted because of the financial situation.
"The [economic situation] is cutting a swathe through the numbers of support organisations we can put a young person in contact with," Clark said. "At the same time, we are seeing an upswell in demand from young people looking for help. While we are addressing this by increasing our capacity to respond through recruiting additional volunteers, there is no doubt that if these trends continue it will have a devastating long-term effect.
