Family services managers not carrying out legal duties

Early Years
Half of family information services managers say they are not carrying out all of their legal duties according to the latest government research.

Section 12 of the Childcare Act 2006 states that family information services must provide comprehensive information, advice and guidance to parents on childcare and early years services in their area.

But a report released last week by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), showed that only half of the family information service managers surveyed felt confident they were meeting these expectations.

Karen Ramshaw, chief executive of the National Association of Family Information Services, said: "Our members have highlighted that senior members of local authorities are not making section 12 a priority."

A spokeswoman for the DCSF said the findings were disappointing, but added work is underway to help authorities improve services and expand their local databases.
