The hub of information - Karen Ramshaw, chief executive, NAFIS

Family information services are about to be thrust into the 21st century. The Parent Know How Directory, which is due to be launched in September, will be a web-based hub of national and local information for families - information that must be provided, updated and maintained by information services across England.

Karen Ramshaw is chief executive of the National Association of Family Information Services (NAFIS), of which about 95 per cent of information teams are members.

She says: "I do think family information services will rise to the challenge, but there may be half a dozen casualties who don't get there in time. There is a lot to deliver and if they don't get support they will struggle to meet their deadlines."

Ramshaw is frank and honest. And in her opinion, local support could be better. A recent government evaluation revealed that half of all family information services managers were not meeting, or did not know if they were meeting, section 12 of the Childcare Act 2006 to provide information, advice and assistance to families. "Section 12 is a duty on local authorities, but family information services get the flack because they take responsibility for it," says Ramshaw.
