Speaking today at a government conference on extended schools, Hughes said: "The whole world is focused on the ideals that Obama is talking about - opportunity, fairness, equality and change. He now has to translate that inspiring vision into practice. It might not seem like it when you are struggling day to day with the nitty gritty of transforming your schools into extended schools, but that is actually part of a similar process of change."
Hughes admitted that reaching the government's target of all schools delivering extended services by 2010 would not be easy - the figure currently stands at 65 per cent - but said the government would "try to make sure that everyone has the backing and support needed to make that progress".
