Employers fail to eradicate discrimination against mothers

Discrimination against pregnant women and those on maternity leave is still rife in the workplace, according to calls to the Working Families legal advice line.

The charity’s annual report, based on 3,000 parents and callers, found that parents are facing impossible choices and discrimination in work as employers are imposing changes to working patterns, which undermine parents’ ability to combine work and childcare.

The report also concluded that high childcare costs and tax credit changes are forcing parents out of work, while discrimination against pregnant women and maternity leave is still prevalent.

Eight per cent of calls to the charity’s advice line in 2011 concerned pregnancy and maternity discrimination, including callers dismissed when they told their employer they were pregnant, demoted on their return to work, and unfairly selected for redundancy.
