Employers are unprepared for changes to paternity leave law

Four in 10 employers are not ready to meet additional paternity leave (APL) arrangements due to come into force next month.

The survey of 85 employer organisations undertaken earlier this month by Working Families looked at employers’ readiness for APL, which comes into effect on 3 April, following a change in legislation last year.

The change will mean fathers will be able to take between two and 26 weeks' leave during the child’s first year, after the mother has returned to work if she has not used all her maternity leave.

Working Families chief executive Sarah Jackson said: "It is surprising that 40 per cent of employers report that they are not yet prepared for the change in the law. Parents of babies due on or after 3 April may already want to discuss their plans to share leave."
