Officials from the Department for Education and Skills met with seniorfigures at the Pre-School Learning Alliance last week in a desperate bidto salvage the situation. The emergency meeting came after chiefexecutive Steve Alexander told the Children Now Fund conference heldlast week that "most of our settings are being run at a loss".
Speaking shortly after the high-level meeting, Alexander told ChildrenNow that he had presented officials with hard evidence to back up hiscase. He said: "They received a whole raft of information from us thatdemonstrated issues around fluctuating occupancy levels and the lack ofsustainability."
It is understood that the DfES officials did not promise much-neededextra funding for children's centres but Alexander was optimistic,nevertheless.
