With the coalition government pledging to target Sure Start children's centres at the neediest families, Jenny Cornish finds out what impact this could have on middle-income parents who use the centres.

A sheepish-looking William Hague squirmed in front of the TV cameras when asked by a middle-class mum in the run-up to the general election whether her child would be prevented from using a children's centre under a Conservative government.

The now Foreign Secretary tried to reassure the mother that her child's place would be secure but it wasn't a convincing performance.

Two months on, families and the sector are still none the wiser about who will be eligible to use children's centres in the future. Despite the coalition government ringfencing funding for England's 3,500 children's centres in the short term, it has also reiterated the Conservative party manifesto pledge to focus the centres on the poorest families.
