In the race to have a children's centre in every community by 2010, manyproviders have spent the last few months limping along, paralysed by thewithdrawal of funding. Now, a leading provider is threatening to dropout and the repercussions could be devastating.
As Children Now revealed last week, the Pre-School Learning Alliance hasheld crisis talks with officials at the Department for Education andSkills (Children Now, 22-28 November).
It is understood that chief executive Steve Alexander told the officialsthe same thing he told the Children Now Fund conference a week earlier:that he was on the brink of handing back the keys to 50 centres becausemost of them are being run at a loss.
