Doncaster places all local children's centres under council control

1 min read Early Years
Doncaster councillors have agreed to bring all of the authority's children's centres in-house because of uncertainty over future funding.

The council’s cabinet approved the plan to bring all of the 21 children’s centres in Doncaster under council control after concluding that without clearer details of funding beyond March 2013, long-term decisions on contracts would be difficult and could potentially pose a financial risk to the council.

Currently, only six of the centres are run by the council while the others are outsourced to charity Action for Children, school governing bodies, the NHS foundation trust and a school trust.

Eric Tatton-Kelly, cabinet member for the children and young people’s service, said: "We're taking action now so that we can effectively manage children's centres over the next few years. There are no issues with the quality of what is on offer at centres at the moment, but we need to plan for an uncertain financial future."
