Popular early years services cut to keep Trafford children's centres open

Opposition councillors in Trafford have urged the authority to reinstate universal children's centre services after receiving concerns from parents.

Trafford Council pledged to keep all its 16 children’s centres open but the opposition Labour group claims this has meant that universal services, such as a popular "play and stay" scheme that offers learning through play, have been cut.

A motion put forward by the Labour group at a meeting of the council urged the leading Conservative group to reconsider its commitment to universal services if local volunteers cannot be found to provide them.

David Acton, leader of the Labour group at Trafford Council, said: "The council has cut nearly £700,000 off the budget. While they have pledged not to close any of the centres they can’t provide many of the services that had been provided in each of the centres.
