Coventry to debate cutting childcare

2 mins read Early Years
Plans to reduce the amount of childcare offered by children's centres in Coventry are set to be debated as the council attempts to cut centre budgets by 1m and target more vulnerable families.

Children’s centres provide seven per cent of all childcare in the city and there are currently nine that are directly subsidised by the council.

But under proposals that are to go before the council’s cabinet next week, the hours of childcare available to children over the age of two will be reduced and children under the age of two will no longer be able to access any childcare.

While the council currently provides full daycare from 8am to 6pm the proposals suggest that this be limited to shorter sessions of around three hours. The council also hopes to target more vulnerable children, specifically those who will be funded under the expanded free entitlement for the most disadvantaged two-year-olds.
