Decision to split Food Standards Agency 'step backwards', says forum

The National Obesity Forum (NOF) has described the government's decision to split the Food Standards Agency (FSA) as a "step backwards" in providing healthy food for children.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley announced plans to split the food industry watchdog yesterday. The government will reclaim responsibility for overseeing nutrition policy and food labelling, and the FSA will now focus solely on food safety.

Tam Fry, NOF board member, said the FSA was the one champion for consumers against the nefarious activities of the food industry and had been making steady progress in reformulating the industry to ensure food was healthier. But he believes it is now a toothless force.

"What this means is that mothers and fathers buying food for their children will still be confused as to whether it is healthy or not," said Fry. "Traffic light labelling on food will go; there will be no legislation in terms of reformulating the industry, no regulation and no ban on trans fats.
