Council saves nursery head jobs in West Dunbartonshire

Early Years
West Dunbartonshire Council has saved the jobs of 14 nursery centre heads who were facing redundancy as part of a cost-cutting review.

At a full council meeting, councillors were asked to consider axing two-thirds of its early education and childcare centre heads posts.

The measure was part of a wider strategic review of childcare, which proposed that the centres would instead be run by local primary school heads.

But an amendment added by Labour councillor Patrick McGlinchey to save the roles was narrowly voted through on the casting vote of provost Denis Agnew.

Councillor McGlinchey had argued that savings needed in the education budget had already been met and further cuts were not necessary. He also argued that the centres benefited from being run by a dedicated early-years specialist.

The SNP has criticised the decision and has warned that savings are needed now to preserve the long-term future of the council's nurseries.
