Camden scraps universal play provision

1 min read Early Years Play
The London Borough of Camden is axing universal play provision and will no longer directly manage play projects as part of cost-cutting plans across the service.

The council’s play services budget for this year has been cut by £2.8m to just £1.5m. Instead of a universal directly managed service, the council is to commission charities and community groups to target disabled children and those living in low-income families.

Six projects, including the Caversham Transitions Project and the Temporary Accommodation Play Project, will close by March.

All other council-funded play projects will close by the end of August, when the new service will launch.

The move follows a consultation among local parents last year, which found that 76 per cent wanted "children in need" to be a priority of the new play service.
