Concern over Derby's plan to drop UK Youth Parliament funding

1 min read Youth Work
Ministers and young people have voiced concerns about Derby City Council's proposal to pull out of the UK Youth Parliament scheme.

Although a decision has not yet been reached, the authority is considering pulling funding for the national scheme saying there are other outlets for youth participation in the area, which can deal with local relevant issues.

But the plan has upset young people in the area who have started a campaign on social networking site Facebook to keep the membership of the youth parliament going.

Community and Local Government ministers John Healy and Caroline Spelman are also writing to the authority expressing their concerns.

Andy Hamfleet, chief executive of the youth parliament said: "There is a range of youth participation models in every local authority and we work with all of them.

"What UK Youth Parliament does is try to offer added value to what already exists in the local areas and raise the profile of participation everywhere.

"We also want to be reflective of local priorities and offer unique experiences such as the upcoming session in the House of Commons chamber."

He added that the group's upcoming annual sitting will also involve sharing of best practice between local authorities.
