Ched Evans case prompts youth sports partnership

A top flight Premier League football club is working with a youth sexual health charity so that young players can understand consent following the Ched Evans rape case.

Speaking at the Ambition UK 2016 conference in Milton Keynes on Tuesday, Helen Marshall, chief executive of Brook, said the charity is "doing some work" with Everton Football Club (FC) to develop resources for their youth teams.

The move comes following the Ched Evans case, which saw the football player re-trialled for rape earlier this year and found not guilty.

"We are doing some work with Everton FC, who are keen to develop some resources for their youth football teams," Marshall said.

"Looking at making of consent following the Ched Evans case, but [also] making sure that footballers - when they get into positions of power - actually understand the issues around consent and that it is not just the absence of a no - there usually has to be a positive yes for that to be an okay relationship."

Marshall also told delegates that Brook's education programme was delivered to 32,000 young people last year, with a view to now extend into colleges and universities.

The plenary session on healthy relationships was chaired by former children's minister Tim Loughton.

He said that healthy relationships and the health and wellbeing of young people is "absolutely essential" but not enough is being done.

"Everyone in this room, the wider youth sector and everyone involved with young people have a role [to play]," he said.

"We must not shy away fm being noisy in asserting the role of engaging young people."
