In a petition to the Government Open Eye said that the EYFS should be downgraded from being a requirement to being "professional guidelines".
The group says that the EYFS restricts freedom of choice, creates unnecessary red tape for providers and that it could put children under too much pressure.
The Government has issued a defence of EYFS, saying it provides "good quality and consistent care". The Government response to the petition also says that the foundation stage has the support from the wider childcare and education commuity, including the National Day Nurseries Association.
Open Eye criticised the Government for "brushing aside" its concerns. "We feel strongly that the government's response to the petition is wholly inadequate," it said in a statement.
