Voluntary delivery of early years hindered by government decisions

Charities have told the government that they are still facing too many barriers to achieving the aim of increasing voluntary sector involvement in early years services.

In a report by the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations’ (Acevo) Early Years Taskforce, the government has been warned that unless it consistently involves the voluntary sector in shaping policy, its vision of expanding voluntary sector delivery of early intervention support will fail.

One Million Reasons for Reform: Unleashing the Potential of the Voluntary Sector in Early Years Services said that while charities have enjoyed a good relationship with the Department for Education (DfE), excluding the voluntary sector from the newly formed Children’s Improvement Board was misguided.

The group has also said financial barriers have been created by failing to ringfence the early intervention grant.
