Early intervention grant is enough to maintain Sure Start network, government claims

The use of localism legislation, increases to the number of staff-run services and a shift towards a culture of early intervention define the government's approach to Sure Start children's centres, according to its response to a select committee report.

The report, published by the then children, schools and families select committee in March last year, called for assurances over the long-term investment in Sure Start, training for professionals and commitment to universal provision.

In its response to the report this month the government reasserted claims that the early intervention grant would support the existing network of children’s centres, but that local authorities, along with the voluntary sector must also "think innovatively".

It states: "We have ensured there is enough money in the early intervention grant to maintain the existing network of children's centres, accessible to all but identifying and supporting the most vulnerable and disadvantaged families.
