In a report released today, researchers from the Cambridge Primary Review claim that the national curriculum should be brought into line with the more developmentally-focused Early Years Foundation Stage.
The report also found that children are being deprived of a balanced curriculum because of testing. Subjects that suffered most were the arts and humanities.
The review, which is led by Professor Robin Alexander, recommends that the government dispense with core curriculum subjects in favour of 12 educational aims and eight areas of knowledge, skills and enquiry.
Educational aims would include wellbeing, engagement, empowerment and autonomy and the broad knowledge areas would include arts and creativity and science and technology.
