Cameron consults young people and charities over riots

1 min read Youth Work
David Cameron sought the views of a number of young people and youth charities inside Number 10 this morning (12 August) as the government attempted to understand the root causes behind this week's riots.

Changemakers chief executive Adam Nicholls, one of those present, told CYP Now after the meeting: "While publicly a hard line needs to be taken, there was a genuine desire to understand what has happened."

He added that the Prime Minister wanted to be seen to be in "listening mode" with the sector and young people. Cameron also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to its National Citizen Service initiative for 16-year-olds at the Downing Street meeting.

London Youth, Arrival Education, Leap Conflicting Conflict, the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services and youth charity V were also at the meeting, along with several young people.

The charities have joined forces to organise a rally of young people and youth sector professionals in Westminster this afternoon.
