3m boost for Northern Irish youth groups

1 min read Youth Work
Youth groups in Northern Ireland have benefited to the tune of more than 3m, after grants from the Big Lottery Fund were announced.

Nine groups from across Northern Ireland were awarded grants totalling around £3.2m from the fund's Empowering Young People programme, which supports young people most at risk, including those who have been disengaged from education, are involved in crime or in care.

Monkstown Boxing Club in Newtownabbey, which uses sports and education to prevent young people turning to crime, has been awarded £377,690 to work with young people in the local area who are not involved in education, employment or training (Neet).

The project will give young people the chance to be mentored and coached in sports such as boxing, encouraging them to get involved in courses and activities that will improve their education, boost their self-esteem and self-worth, and improve their job opportunities.
