What is it? Launched in 1983, children's charity Wooden Spoon was set up within the UK and Ireland rugby community to fundraise and spend money on projects to improve the lives of disadvantaged young people. Its mission statement is "to enhance the quality and prospect of life for children and young people in the United Kingdom and Ireland who are disadvantaged physically, mentally or socially." Its links with the sport give the charity access to leading figures in rugby to help with fundraising and promote its projects. All money raised by the charity's 40 regional volunteer committees is spent on projects in their local community.
