John Ellerman Foundation

Funding for charities, including those working with disadvantaged children and young people

Funding The foundation makes grants of £5m a year to about 180 different charities. The minimum grant is £10,000.

Funder There were two Sir John Ellermans. The first was an entrepreneur who made untold wealth largely through the shipping business, the second his son — a zoologist and philanthropist who quietly went about charitable work. He left his shares in the Ellerman Lines business to this trust.

Aim This is a generalist trust with a wide range of interests. Its main broad categories are health and disability, social welfare  — with disadvantaged children and young people as one of three focus areas — and conservation.
