What is it? Created by Canadian food and retail businessman Willard Garfield Weston in 1958, the Garfield Weston Foundation offers grants to support a wide range of projects, including youth work, education and the arts. It is still run by descendents of Garfield Weston, who died in 1978.
How much is on offer? There is no maximum limit for grants. According to its annual report for 2010, £40m was handed out during the year. Of this, £2.3m was handed to 200 youth projects. The largest youth grant was £250,000 to Fairbridge, to help run courses for young people not in education, employment and training. Three youth grants of £100,000 were made last year to the British Sports Trust, the Outward Bound Trust and The Challenge Network.
