Youth opportunity fund: How we spent it in ... Hillingdon

3 mins read Youth Work
The London borough is to bring together all its existing funding streams to create an enlarged youth fund, writes Tim Burke.

The London Borough of Hillingdon's allocation for youth opportunity and youth capital funds for 2007/08 came to £359,699. However, this figure is set to expand with new money brought in to create a broader-based Young People's Fund in the borough.

The young members meet monthly at the Civic Centre for panel meetings co-ordinated by the borough's Youth and Connexions Service Active Involvement Team.

Who is on the panel? Young people from the borough's youth council worked alongside the youth work support team in order to market the funds and recruit panel members.

Tom Murphy, head of the youth service, says: "We worked closely with professional colleagues, such as the 16 Plus team, and those working with care leavers and other hard-to-reach groups. The young people have been involved as mentors and roles models, and will help to recruit and select new members - they are an integral part of that process."
