Youth Opportunity Fund: How we spent it in ... Devon

Six YouthBanks were set up across the county to help ensure funds were distributed evenly to youth projects, writes Tim Burke.

Divisional officer Kev Henman has been supporting the development of Devon's youth opportunity fund and youth capital fund arrangements since it was awarded a total of £636,531 per year in 2006.

"Like everyone else, we didn't have much time to sort things out, so we gave the two funds to existing bodies. Exeter YouthBank took on the youth capital fund and the Young People's Shadow Executive managed the youth opportunity fund," he says. It was soon realised that in a large county area like Devon, it was important that decision-making be delegated more locally, and so six local YouthBanks were created to distribute the money.
