Tove Noorjahaan Dalenius, independent film-maker and community youth worker.

What were you like when you were young?

At the age of 17 I was living with other young people in a squat in Gothenburg, Sweden. We were influenced by anarchistic ideas and practised consensus decision-making. We reflected deeply on things and decided the squat should be drug- and alcohol-free - we were stricter than many people's homes.

Where did you go to university?

I came to the UK to study fine art and film-making in Hull and Sheffield, before moving to Leicester. While I was doing a fine art course, I started to get involved in voluntary work. I was always looking for chances to make films and, because I was active in the community, the two things would come together.

What types of projects have you done?

I've worked with community arts groups, made films and produced billboards, mobile phone animations and websites with groups of young people. It's great when you allow young people space to come up with their own ideas as too much of education tells them what to think and is target-driven. I studied film but I learned far more by doing it.

What would you like to do in the future?

I'd like more space to work on my own film projects and for my own personal development. You have to provide the magic when you work with young people, and you have to be able to build up the mental energy to do that.
