Jeremy Brent was senior youth worker at Southmead Youth Centre in Bristol for 28 years until his death in 2006. He was involved in many local organisations, detached work and project work, some of which, such as Radio Southmead, is described in his book. He was also actively involved in the Community & Youth Workers' Union, which has been involved in producing this book.

This is an impressive record for any youth worker, but Brent was also an astute writer on community and youth work and achieved a PhD in 2000. His book includes his thesis and central to it is his own identity as both an insider and an outsider in Southmead, which was "both a practical space full of people and a realm of theory and knowledge".
