In the Gambia I was in the Scouts from about the age of eight. By the age of 14, I was doing a lot of peer education around sexual health. I wanted to work in an area where I could help people solve problems.
- What were your early roles?
I volunteered with groups such as the Red Cross. When I was 19, I was president of the Gambia Student Union. I also set up the Youth Association for Advancement, working at grass-roots level on areas such as health.
- What about studying?
I did a lot of courses and programmes. We didn't have a university in the Gambia at the time so I came to England to do an MA in Community Education at De Montfort University.
